Beyond Paint: Why Some Facilities Require Stainless Steel Fall Protection
Providing fall protection for employees working at heights in material handling and manufacturing facilities is a necessity. OSHA’s Walking Working Surfaces regulation mandates fall protection for employees working at heights of four feet or higher, which applies to production platforms and material drop areas. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) ensures consistent quality standards in the production and testing of medicinal products or active ingredients. Selection of a safety gate goes beyond standard sizing and model choice; it also needs to account for the material from which it’s made.
An important note: when you order one of our safety gates constructed out of stainless steel, it’s not just the gate itself. We use specific fabrication practices for these environments and ensure that all hardware used in the system is also stainless. In addition, we use continuous welds, and all of our steel tubing is capped and sealed.
Many facilities feature environments in which painted steel isn’t a viable option, which is when stainless steel becomes the better choice for constructing the safety gate. We’ll look at the environments and industries in which stainless steel construction is mandatory, and how some companies are taking advantage of their safety gates.
Advantages of Stainless Steel Constructed Safety Gates
In many manufacturing environments, stainless steel offers specific advantages over painted steel. While the cost of stainless steel is higher than painted steel, its longer service life in harsh environments, coupled with sanitation regulation compliance, means the benefits can outweigh the costs.
- Corrosion & rust resistance: Stainless steel resists corrosion at the material level, not just the surface, so impact damage doesn’t create a rust starting point.
- Sanitary/hygienic design: Our fabrication in stainless steel features continuous welds, no exposed bolt holes, and capped tubing ends. We also provide electro-polishing options for facilities with the strictest sanitary requirements, in order to meet FDA/USDA guidelines and pass GMP audits.
- Chemical & wash-down resistance: Stainless steel withstands repeated exposure to chlorine, ammonium compounds, caustic cleaners, and steam without degrading.
- Appearance & durability: Stainless steel maintains a clean, professional look for decades without repainting, and resists visible denting or scarring better than painted mild steel in high-traffic zones.
What Types of Facilities Need Stainless Steel Safety Gates
Stainless steel construction is often mandatory for industrial safety gates in certain environments. While you likely know the sanitation requirements in your facility, many industries have specific environments that mandate stainless steel, either throughout the entire facility or around production areas. Facilities that focus on the following will likely need stainless steel construction:
- Food & beverage production facilities often feature mixing, batching, and ingredient-handling platforms, which are subject to USDA/FDA sanitary design standards.
- Flavor, fragrance, and ingredient manufacturing facilities have sanitary requirements similar to food and beverage producers. In addition, the equipment may be exposed to hot, dusty, or chemically active production areas.
- Pharmaceutical & biotech often feature cleanroom environments must adhere to GMP compliance. Safety gates are frequently washed down and exposed to particulate and corrosion byproducts.
- Cosmetics & personal care manufacturing facilities often have sanitary and aesthetic requirements similar to food production.
- Dairy, brewing, and beverage bottling facilities may have areas with constant washdown using water, steam, and caustic cleaners. Stainless steel is needed in these environments not only to handle the washdowns, but also to meet sanitary requirements.
- Chemical processing plants may expose safety gates to corrosive fumes, acids, or caustics that degrade painted or even galvanized finishes.
- Wastewater/water treatment facilities often have work platforms in environments with high humidity, which can mean constant moisture on the safety gate itself. Chlorine exposure can also be corrosive to painted surfaces.
- Cold storage & refrigerated distribution centers expose safety gates to condensation cycles that accelerate rust on painted surfaces.
- Coastal or marine-adjacent facilities may expose safety gates to salty air, which accelerates corrosion.
Stainless Steel Safety Gate Case Studies
Food Production Ingredient Mixing Platform
One of our customers needed to modernize an elevated mixing area, where ingredient sacks are taken from pallets and dumped into hoppers, without losing tight floor space. Food safety regulations required stainless steel for both the platform and protective guarding, and due to these regulations, there were strict fabrication specifications: no bolt holes in tubing, continuous welds, and all open tubing capped.
After reviewing the area and requirements, we created two stainless steel High Pallet Pivot safety gates. The gates were installed side-by-side, sharing a center stanchion and accommodating pallets up to 80″ tall.
The new safety gates provide continuous fall protection without compromising sanitary compliance. They also gave the customer the ability to load one bay while unloading the adjacent one, increasing throughput without compromising safety.
Flavor & Fragrance Manufacturer, Limited Platform Depth
A facility manager at a flavor manufacturer reached out to us because they needed pallet-drop fall protection on a production platform located over 10 feet up, in a hot, dusty production environment. Because the platform features hoppers placed close to the ledge, the area was severely limited for safety gate depth. Standard Roly® or Pivot safety gates would not fit within the space.
Additionally, the manufacturer’s sanitary requirements called for electro-polished stainless steel, stainless hardware, and capped tubing ends. Our team determined the best solution for the platform was a Tri-Side safety gate constructed in stainless steel. With stanchions only 14″ deep and a cantilevering rear gate, the model wouldn’t take up much space on the platform. Employees could also access the material drop area from either side, rather than strictly from the rear.
The stainless steel Tri-Side safety gate provides continuous protection; the dual gate system ensures one gate is always closed, in a tight footprint that didn’t impact production flow. The safety gate also met the sanitation requirements and can withstand the hostile environment.
Constructing safety gates from stainless steel isn’t a material upgrade so much as it’s a requirement for environments that involve wash downs, corrosive materials, or strict sanitation. We engineer our safety gates to fit within your application’s space and workflow first, and then ensure the system is fabricated in the right material.
