Powered Safety Gate Solution Selected by Carpet Manufacturer
Not every safety challenge fits a standard mold — and for one carpet manufacturer in Georgia, the solution needed to be as large as the product they were handling: carpet rolls.
The Challenge
The company operates a facility with a elevated platform 20 feet from ground level where finished carpet rolls are moved and staged as part of the production process. Some of the rolls reach up to 208 inches in length. The platform had long been secured with swing gates that no longer met the company’s safety expectations because they must be left often while the material is staged.
The facility needed to upgrade its safety gate solution on the elevated platform. The team wanted a power operated solution, and the system had to meet one critical requirement: one gate had to be fully closed before the other gate started to open, ensuring employees were fully protected at all times.
With products of exceptional length and a safety-conscious team, a standard stock safety gate solution wasn’t going to cut it. The team needed a gate engineered specifically for their application.
The Solution
Given the exceptional length of the carpet rolls, the new safety gate would need to be custom-built deeper than standard sizes to safely contain loads up to 208 inches. The carpet manufacturer reached out to Mezzanine Safeti-Gates to inquire about their custom design capability. The Mezzanine Safeti-Gates team scheduled an on-site visit to assess the platform, take precise measurements, and fully understand the operational requirements before recommending a solution.
After a thorough review, the team specified a power operated Roly TCA safety gate custom-engineered to meet the depth required for this application. The Roly TCA uses dual, counterbalanced gates and powered operation to maintain a safe environment at the platform edge at all times. The interlocked design ensures that neither gate can be opened independently. This was a critical safety feature sought out by the manufacturer to provide fall protection, regardless of where employees are working on the platform. Power operation allows for smooth, no-touch gate cycling, adding both convenience and ergonomics to the safety process.
Because the team was particularly safety-conscious, they also opted to add product containment netting on the ledge gate. Netting is an available option that provides an additional physical barrier at the platform edge, and prevents material from falling from the elevated pallet drop zone.
The Result
The carpet manufacturer now has a powered safety gate system designed for their unique handling requirements. The custom-depth Roly TCA, combined with interlocked gate operation and containment netting, ensures that employees are protected at every stage of the loading and unloading process — and the extra large material is contained within one safety gate.
