Tri-Side Safety Gate: A Custom Edge Protection System
Many of our safety gate models begin as custom designs to meet specific customer needs. The Tri-Side safety gate is another excellent example. This innovative fall protection system was originally developed for a large drug store chain. Over many years, we partnered with the chain and installed hundreds of safety gates across their facilities nationwide.
The customer primarily relied on our Rack-Supported Roly safety gates to enhance edge-fall protection in their pick modules. They also implemented free-standing versions on mezzanines where additional passive fall protection was required.
Solving Space Constraints with an Edge Protection System
When this customer constructed a new distribution center, they contacted us regarding a unique challenge. Several pallet drop areas were positioned directly within walkways. Space constraints made traditional solutions difficult. While a fall restraint was necessary, there was insufficient space for a Roly safety gate.
To address this issue, our engineers developed a compact design offering the advantages of a dual-gate system while functioning efficiently in limited space. The result was the Tri-Side safety gate.
How the Tri-Side Guardrail System Works
This edge protection system features a U-shaped rear gate. When lifted, it allows safe workstation access while the ledge gate secures the deck, creating a controlled work zone. Fixed stanchions extend only 14 inches deep, helping maintain a safe environment without sacrificing valuable platform space.
Pallets can be accessed from either side and removed straight back or at a ninety-degree angle. This flexible guardrail system proved ideal for walkway-adjacent pallet drop areas. Due to recurring customer demand and similar space limitations, we added the Tri-Side model to our standard product line more than 10 years ago. These passive fall protection systems can be fabricated in stainless or mild steel. Units may also be power-operated and customized in width, depth, and height.
Applications Beyond Mezzanines
The Tri-Side model has been successfully integrated into pick module environments as a rack-supported fall protection guardrail solution. In these applications, existing pallet racks provide structural support. This design is also well-suited for doorway applications requiring safety swing gates, particularly where overhead climate or fire doors are present. Production platforms benefit from this safety railing design when employees handle materials near elevated edges. One of the most unique uses includes installation on scissor-lift tables, functioning as a mobile fall protection system during lift operation.
